State of Origin Betting
Michael Jennings’ performance in Game I of State of Origin has got plenty of Blues fans talking, as well as considering backing him in State of Origin betting.
The Panthers star scored an excellent try to put New South Wales ahead at Suncorp Stadium, only for the Blues to be ultimately denied by Billy Slater’s late score.
Jennings, though only 23, has had representative recognition for the past three years, starting when he was selected for City versus Country in 2009.
He made his Blues debut in the third game of the 2009 Origin series, having missed the chance to play in Game II when he was injured.
As far as wider recognition goes, though, his feats in the 2009 Four Nations tournament were what caught the eye. He made his Kangaroos debut against France and scored a hat-trick – becoming only the fourth player to do so on debut (Lionel Morgan, Brad Mackay and David Williams the others).
Jennings was one of New South Wales’ outstanding players in the second half of Game I at Suncorp on May 25, and was unlucky not to bag two tries.
Jennings raided with 15 minutes to go and looked certain to score, only to be denied by a superb tackle from Slater.
And he showed that he will be a real handful for the rest of the series, zig-zagging his way through the defence to score.
That was his first try of the year, but there will be some State of Origin bets on him to repeat in Game II.
Clearly, there are improvements needed by the Blues in Game II if they are to end their depressing sequence of results.
But there was enough evident in the partnership between Jennings and Mark Gasnier in the centres to suggest that they can exploit any weaknesses in the Maroons’ defence for the rest of the series.
